Blockade of the action of nitric oxide in human septic shock increases systemic vascular resistance and has detrimental effects on pulmonary function after a short infusion of methylene blue BJMBR
Weingartner,R.; Oliveira,E.; Oliveira,E.S.; Sant'Anna,U.L.; Oliveira,R.P.; Azambuja,L.A.; Friedman,G..
To investigate the role of nitric oxide in human sepsis, ten patients with severe septic shock requiring vasoactive drug therapy and mechanical ventilation were enrolled in a prospective, open, non-randomized clinical trial to study the acute effects of methylene blue, an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase. Hemodynamic and metabolic variables were measured before and 20, 40, 60, and 120 min after the start of a 1-h intravenous infusion of 4 mg/kg of methylene blue. Methylene blue administration caused a progressive increase in mean arterial pressure (60 [55-70] to 70 [65-100] mmHg, median [25-75th percentiles]; P<0.05), systemic vascular resistance index (649 [479-1084] to 1066 [585-1356] dyne s-1 cm-5 m-2; P<0.05) and the left ventricular stroke...

High prevalence of the GSTM3*A/B polymorphism in sub-Sarahan African populations BJMBR
Teixeira,D.; Vargens,D.; Príncipe,A.; Oliveira,E.; Amorim,A.; Prata,M.J.; Suarez-Kurtz,G..
A 3-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in intron 6 of GSTM3 (rs1799735, GSTM3*A/*B) affects the activity of the phase 2 xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme GSTM3 and has been associated with increased cancer risk. The GSTM3*B allele is rare or absent in Southeast Asians, occurs in 5-20% of Europeans but was detected in 80% of Bantu from South Africa. The wide genetic diversity among Africans led us to investigate whether the high frequency of GSTM3*B prevailed in other sub-Saharan African populations. In 168 healthy individuals from Angola, Mozambique and the São Tomé e Príncipe islands, the GSTM3*B allele was three times more frequent (0.74-0.78) than the GSTM3*A allele (0.22-0.26), with no significant differences in allele frequency across the three groups....

Metabolism of broilers subjected to different lairage times at the abattoir and its relationship with broiler meat quality Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rodrigues,D.R.; Café,M.B.; Jardim Filho,R.M.; Oliveira,E.; Trentin,T.C.; Martins,D.B.; Minafra,C.S..
ABSTRACT An investigation was made into the effects of different lairage times and the position of chicken crates during transport to the slaughterhouse on the biochemical and hematological profile and physical parameters of broilers, such as color and pH of their breast meat. The treatments were defined by the animals slaughtered after 0, 2, 4 and 6 hours of lairage time at the slaughterhouse, transported in crates located in the top and bottom layers of the truck. It was found that increasing the lairage time at the slaughterhouse to over two hours reduced the number of lymphocytes and increased the heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio and the basophil count in the hemogram. In addition, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and cholesterol levels increased...

Neonatal tobacco smoke reduces thermogenesis capacity in brown adipose tissue in adult rats BJMBR
Peixoto,T.C.; Moura,E.G.; Oliveira,E.; Younes-Rapozo,V.; Soares,P.N.; Rodrigues,V.S.T.; Santos,T.R.; Peixoto-Silva,N.; Carvalho,J.C.; Calvino,C.; Conceição,E.P.S.; Guarda,D.S.; Claudio-Neto,S.; Manhães,A.C.; Lisboa,P.C..
Maternal smoking is a risk factor for progeny obesity. We have previously shown, in a rat model of neonatal tobacco smoke exposure, a mild increase in food intake and a considerable increase in visceral adiposity in the adult offspring. Males also had secondary hyperthyroidism, while females had only higher T4. Since brown adipose tissue (BAT) hypofunction is related to obesity, here we tested the hypothesis that higher levels of thyroid hormones are not functional in BAT, suggesting a lower metabolic rate. We evaluated autonomic nerve activity in BAT and its function in adult rats that were exposed to tobacco smoke during lactation. At birth, litters were adjusted to 3 male and 3 female pups/litter. From postnatal day (PND) 3 to 21, Wistar lactating rats...
